O'Neil auditioned for the third season of Canadian Idol in early 2005, while she was still a high school student. The singer made it through to the top tier of contestants following the judges' praise for her voice. O'Neil was given high praise by judges, but she suffered major losses during the Top 10 weeks and Top 9 of the Finals, when she fell to the lowest 3 and 2 spots and bottom 2 respectively. The judges were shocked at this, and advised the viewers to select contestants such as Melissa with most impressive singing talent. O'Neil's performances were so good that she didn't even make it to the bottom three once in the future. Following two stunning performances on September 7, 2005, when O'Neil along with Rex Goudie were able to make it into the final two, the judge Werner reportedly predicted that the headlines in the morning papers were going to read O'Neil beat Goudie to become the third Canadian Idol, the first female winner, and also the youngest winner of the show's time . O'Neil was contacted immediately from Canadian PM Paul Martin, congratulating on her victory on Canadian Idol.
